ABOUT PENROSE ARLINGTON
There are approximately three miles between Penrose and Washington, DC, in central Arlington County, a residential neighborhood. To the north is Arlington Boulevard, to the south, to the east, to the west is Washington Boulevard, and to the west is South Fillmore Street/South Walter Reed Drive. Prominent African American leaders William H. Butler and Henry Louis Holmes first platted and subdivided Penrose in 1882. Penrose was named Central Arlington partly due to its proximity to Freedman's Village and its lack of restrictive covenants, allowing many African Americans to settle there, including well-known medical researcher Dr. Charles Drew
By 1926, Penrose had approximately 70 houses. Since the opening of Route 50 on Arlington Boulevard in the 1930s, the neighborhood has grown to 175 buildings and several churches due to federal government agencies in Washington and military establishments nearby. In the early years of development, the community was dominated by vernacular, Queen Anne, and Italianate-style homes. Homes in Arlington County were mainly wood-framed bungalows and vernacular dwellings during the 1910s and 1920s. Kit houses and mail-ordered houses were standard practices. As a result of the rail line, Penrose built many kit homes because materials could be shipped quickly.
