More about Tenleytown Real Estate
Located in the northwest quadrant of Washington, DC, Tenleytown is a historic neighborhood with a suburban feel and urban amenities, including dining and retail. It is conveniently located so residents can get around on foot. Tenleytown is well-connected to the rest of the city via public transportation and major roadways, and its close proximity to major attractions, such as the National Zoo, provides residents with plenty of recreational opportunities.
This area was initially named after John Tennally, owner of a tavern in the 18th century. Point Reno is the highest point in Washington, and nearly all television and radio towers are in this area. A Civil War fort at a high altitude, Fort Reno protected the Capital from invasions and served as a lookout point during the war. The strategic location of Fort Reno made it the ideal place to house the television and radio towers, as they are less likely to be interrupted by interference from the surrounding landscape. Additionally, the high altitude gives them a more remarkable ability to broadcast their signal further.
John Tennally was the original builder of a tavern that served as the center of the village that eventually came to be known as "Tennallytown." This village consisted of a few stores, a blacksmith shop, and a church and was surrounded by farms, orchards, dairies, and forests. Tennallytown was founded in 1791 and formally incorporated in 1846. It was initially built around a tavern owned by John Tennally and eventually came to include a few stores, a blacksmith shop, and a church.
